Corporal Terence Clement Jones
Terence Clement Jones was born on 21 May 1890 at Ava Terrace, Bangor, County Down, the second of five children of English-born organist and professor of music, Robert Jones, and his wife Jane Edith (nee Phillips). By 1911 he was living with his widowed father and three of his brothers at 29 Hamilton Road, Bangor, and working as a clerk.
Jones enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 25 August 1914 (No.1037 – later Corps of Hussars No.71208). On 12 March 1915 the County Down Herald reported that:
... during the present week Trooper Terence Jones, son of Mr. Robert Jones, Hamilton Road, Bangor, who is ... stationed with the North Irish Horse at Cople, is home for a few days' leave. He is looking in the pink of condition and has been the recipient of numerous handshakings from his many Bangor friends. He leaves Bangor for Bedford this evening or to-morrow (Saturday) morning.
On 1 May 1915 Jones embarked for France with D Squadron.
He remained with D Squadron throughout the war. In May 1916 it joined with A and E Squadrons to form the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to VII, XIX then V Corps. In February-March 1918 the 1st Regiment was converted to a cyclist regiment, serving as corps cyclists to V Corps for the remainder of the war.
Jones was transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, on 11 March 1919.
After the war Jones emigrated to Canada, where he settled at Winnipeg. On 16 August 1922 he married Elizabeth May Anderson. He died at Winnipeg on 7 June 1955.
Two of Jones's brothers also served during the war. Victor Mervyn Jones, Royal Irish Rifles, who was made a prisoner during the German 1918 Spring offensive; and Arthur Robert Llewellyn Jones, who served in the 1st Life Guards.
